CHAMPAIGN, IL – In the wake of another senseless act of violence against students, David Palmer, Democratic candidate for the Illinois 13th Congressional District, has issued the following statement on the tragic events in Oxford, Michigan.
“I am deeply saddened and my heart goes out to the families affected by yesterday’s school shooting in Michigan.
We are in the grasps of a public health crisis. From Michigan to Florida and to reach here in Champaign, IL gun violence has claimed countless lives. Enough is Enough!
Like many parents in America, Chelsea and I are terrified of receiving the phone call those three children’s parents had to receive today. We have to break this seemingly endless cycle of violence and this must start with our elected leaders.
Earlier this year the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 8, which would implement a nationwide universal background check on any individual who wishes to purchase a firearm. As a gun owner myself, all I am asking is for sensible gun safety measures to be implemented.
I am imploring our U.S. Senators to pass H.R. 8 and S. 529 (The Senate Version of the Background Check Expansion Act) because frankly our kids will continue to die with this inaction.”
