Healthcare Rights – Support of Medicare for All!
There’s really no nice way to say it—our healthcare infrastructure is broken. And, the incredible stress on our system of fighting Covid-19 has shown just how bad things are.
Illinois ranks twenty-second in healthcare in the United States. Smack dab in the middle of the pack. We have some of the best, most advanced hospitals in the world like Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. But here in Central Illinois, good care is often out of reach.
We need bold solutions to the healthcare crisis our country faces. We need Medicare for All. It is broadly popular among Americans and will be transformative in lessening the inequities we see in healthcare right now. By ensuring that every man, woman, and child has access to quality care, free at the point of service, we will have healthier communities. Period.
When elected, I will fight for:
- Medicare for All, so all people have access to quality, affordable healthcare.
- A woman’s right to choose. Plain and simple.
- Lowering the cost of prescription drugs, because no one should not have to ration medicine.
Healthcare is a basic human right. No one should have to worry about paying their medical bills when they or someone they love is facing a difficult diagnosis. Seeing a doctor should not mean going into debt. Bringing your child to the pediatrician should not mean choosing between a deductible and putting food on the table.
My promise to you is that I will work tirelessly to make sure you and your family have the peace of mind to visit the doctor and receive the treatment you need to get well without the risk of losing everything.
With two little ones in daycare, my wife Chelsea and I know how much it takes to raise a family here in Central Illinois. Across our district and the country, families struggle to find safe, affordable childcare for their kids while they earn a living.
In many states, Illinois included, childcare can be as costly as rent or a mortgage! No family should have to worry about choosing to keep a roof over their head and food on the table or provide their children care.
I am committed to creating a future that my children would be proud of. And the first step towards that is ensuring that every family in our district can grow and thrive.
I believe that the Child Tax Credit, introduced by President Biden as part of the American Rescue Plan in 2021, should be permanent. This critical resource has put dollars directly into the pockets of moms and dads across America to meet the needs of their children. Nationally, the Child Tax Credit cut childhood poverty in half in 2021. Imagine what this could mean for our families if it were permanent.
Making the Child Tax Credit permanent will continue to be an economic boon, creating jobs in the childcare industry and sending parents back to work after a difficult time during the pandemic.
Together, we will build a stronger future for us all.
The foundation of our democracy is under attack. Republicans across the country have introduced legislation aimed at undermining voting rights in this country. These blatant attacks on our democracy are unacceptable, and that is why we need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act will slow down the implementation of these voter suppression laws currently being enacted in Republican-led states, while also stopping future voter suppression laws from being enacted.
John Lewis dedicated his life to ensure all Americans had the right to participate in our democracy, and we owe it to his memory to continue his fight. I will continue to protect everyone’s freedom to vote.
I am a strong advocate for voting by mail as a safe and secure way of participating in our democracy.
Climate Change/Clean Energy
These summer months are getting hotter, the winters are getting colder, and around IL-13 we are directly feeling the effects of climate change. We need drastic changes in how we address and manage our everchanging climate, and it starts here.
Investments in clean energy will not only help to potentially curb the long-lasting effects of climate change, but will create new industries throughout our district. That is why I support investing resources in developing wind and solar energies. We can reduce carbon emissions and create new economies here at home.
Fighting for Workers
I grew up in a union household and was part of the NBA Players Association during my time in the G-League. I understand the importance of a good quality job with reliable pay and benefits. We have seen too many families be negatively impacted due to COVID-19 disrupting their work lives. I am a strong advocate for protecting workers rights and will continue to stand with my brothers and sisters of labor.
Central Illinois and Its Agricultural Economy
Central Illinois has a long rich agricultural history, one that is being threatened by poorly negotiated trade agreements and high levels of market inflation. All while losing money due to poor rural infrastructure, which makes taking their products to market. My proven history of working with the farm community during my time at Country Financial has positioned me well to advocate on their behalf.
I will strive to:
- Defend farmers against market inflation and foreign and domestic price increases.
- Help ensure that farmers are able to work towards retirement and protect their way of life.
- Protect crop insurance to keep our farmers in business.
